Greek Olympics!

Below you will see the joy of cardboard armor and fun with the Ancient Greek Olympics.  While our armor didn't weigh a ton and our horses didn't neigh...at all, we had a great time!  Thanks to Mr. Weaver for leading this during P.E. time.

10/15/13

Sixth grade blog for 10/15/13

Today we learned about convection currents and we did an experiment with water and food coloring to show how the currents work.  The hot water was suppose to represent the core heat of our earth and we learned that hot or warm water is less dense or lighter than cooler water.  We also enjoyed plate boundary movement with shaving cream.

Happenings On Campus

  • Thursday, October 17: CHPCS Harvest Festival. Come have fun with us! This is a free, family fun affair! Is your apple/pumpkin baking contest item ready? 6:00 to 7:30. This is a Harvest Festival, not a Halloween Carnival; please save the costumes for Thursday the 31st!
  • Thursday, October 17: Great Oregon ShakeOut! At 10:17 a.m. we will DROP! COVER! and HOLD ON! The Metro area is above the Cascadia Fault, which is a real thing. We are not wondering about "if," we are wondering and preparing for "when."
  • NO FIELD TRIP for sixth grade on Friday, October 25th

Language Arts
Math
Core Knowledge
In class students are responsible for a grammar notebook as well as a vocabulary notebook. Students should bring home their vocab notebook nightly as we have Riggs homework. If we have a Greek and Latin root quiz or students need to finish in class grammar work, they will bring them both home. In grammar students have done a great job showing what they know, and working toward building our solid foundation. Currently, we are working on our Common Core Standards and understanding pronouns in their specific cases.
Writing is beginning to take off as students have created a checklist in which they are comfortably challenging themselves. Students should be working through one writing sample from rough to final draft per week.
Reading groups are going well as we have worked through some informational text and will now explore literary text. If you would like to volunteer, our reading group time is from 11:15 until 11:45 everyday.
Students did a wonderful job keeping up on math during outdoor school The material will begin to get harder as the review part of our book is coming to a close. After doing a notebook check last week most students are forming good math habits. The notebook was checked on the following:
  • Showing math work for each problem.
  • Practice set is done for every lesson.
  • The entire 30 problems in Written Practice is done (problems should not be left blank as it is important to try every problem and ask for help in class as needed).
Lastly, every student needs a ruler and a math graphing notebook to be successful in class.
We have finished our desert unit and are now moving into our Ancient Greece and Rome unit in History. Students were given an art project that is due Monday, October 28th. If this is news to you, please ask your child what the project guidelines are! We will be making simple mud homes like the Greeks later this week as well as cardboard armor if there is time. Students will have some light history reading assigned throughout next week.
In science we are in the midst of our plate tectonic unit. We learned some great things about the Juan De Fuca Plate, as well as the North American Plate, while we were at outdoor school. We will continue to explore what is happening beneath us this upcoming week. We will explore types of plate movements with graham crackers, play-doh and our bodies. Also, we will look at our earthquake software (that continually looks at seismic activity in Oregon and on our own campus) in the science laboratory. Song writing will be happening as well!
Have an adventurous week!

Plate Tectonics in Class Today

Today in sixth grade we used hard boiled eggs to think about plate tectonics.

Questions we answered, that you can ask your child as well:

Why would we get hard boiled eggs in science to talk about plate tectonics?

How is an egg like the earth?

How is the shell related to our crust?

How can we compare the layers of an egg to the layers of earth?

How do we get that smell out of our room?

Have a wonderful rest of your week!

Back to the Classroom

Dear Sixth Grade Families,

It is bittersweet to return to campus today.  The students had a blast at outdoor school and being in the classroom is a whole lot different than being outside from 9am - 4pm.  Without much time to get back into the swing of things, Jog-A-Thon was a success today.  Students will bring home their lap sheets today and will still be collecting money up until the 17th.  Thank you for your support during our only classroom fundraiser of the year!

A few pictures from outdoor school:

Please know that with the Jog-A-Thon today, our homework focus is math and no Riggs tonight.
Have a wonderful week,

Miss King
