News You Can Use

News from Sixth Grade:

Field Trip--May 10th to the Oregon Children's Theater to see Gathering Blue in the morning, then we will most likely be back on campus in the afternoon for a guest speaker about immigration.

Please email me if you are interested in chaperoning and/or you can drive.

Band & Orchestra Recital (Art Show as well)--May 16th 6:30-8:00.  Students need to report to their room at 6:15 on this evening of music

Battle of the Books is happening now with the final battle on May 6th!  Today fourth grade gave us a challenge, but sixth grade won their first battle 48 to 43!  Keep on reading!

Core Knowledge

We have had a blast in our oceans unit.  Students did an outstanding job presenting their diorama's and they all looked great.  We will be showing these off throughout the school for all to see.  If you haven't seen the "Great Wave" masterpieces/quizzes they are also on display in the hallway.  Last week our squid dissection was a huge success!  Students did an excellent job, even with the smell!  We learned squids have three hearts, and even took out the beak for a closer look, very cool!  We began our Latin American unit this week.  Students should be bringing home their history books and answering questions about the chapter nightly.

Language Arts

As you know students are working toward publishing their books this week.  We are wrapping up non-fiction text in our reading groups and will begin the Tale of Troy next.  Mrs. Denman has stepped up to grade our writing in sixth grade as she loves getting out her red pen!  Students are meeting with Mrs. Denman today and tomorrow about their latest ocean piece.  Thanks Mrs. Denman!

Oaks

Retesting started today and will go through next week.  If you child met the standard score your child will not automatically retest unless you send a note asking us to retest him or her.  If your child did not meet the standard score they will be retesting unless we are notified otherwise.  We are testing in small groups and small chunks of time to allow students the best opportunity to pass!

Math

Students received their latest test back today and should get a parent signature after correcting the ones they missed.  It is vital this time of year that students be correcting not only their test, but their missed homework problems as well and getting a parent signature to make sure you are seeing what they are missing.  Homework is meant for practice and to keep their skills fresh.  If your student doesn't understand something now, they need to learn it before moving on.  Our math is a spiraling curriculum building off of other lessons to master concepts.  Please let me know if I can be of help in anyway.

Thank you,

Miss King

April 12th Field trip

Dear Sixth Grade Families,

We have a field trip coming up quick, April 12th!  It is 98% likely (I say that because it has been crazy this year and it seems one can never be too sure) that we have a bus to Newport.  If you would like to ride on bus for 2 1/2 to 3 hours with our class, visit the Hatfield Marine Science Center, do a crab lab, go to the beach, before heading home, please let me know!

Students are expected to be at school at 7am on this day so we can be on the bus and heading out by 7:15am.  We will be making it back to campus by 4:30pm.

Again, this is a bit of a longer day, but worth it!

Thank you and please be watching for a newsletter in the next day or so,

Miss King
